Dummies come in various sizes and shapes, and it's important to find the right one for your baby – if you choose to use one at all.
A dummy that is the wrong size for your child will be hard for them to use and can affect tongue and teeth placement. Dummies usually come with a recommended age – in the case of Haakaa soothers, they'll be marked as either 0–3 months or three months+. Choosing which one will suit your baby comes down to various factors, not just their age, so use your judgment. If the dummy looks a little small, it might be time to move up. If it's too big for your baby to use comfortably (e.g., they can't fit it in their mouth properly), you might need to go back to a smaller size.
There are a couple of things to look out for when buying a dummy. The shield should be at least 3.5cm wide so your baby can't fit the whole thing in their mouth. It should also have at least two ventilation holes in the shield to help allow airflow and a sturdy, easy-grip ring so that you can quickly remove the dummy if necessary. Finally, one-piece dummies are the safest option, as multi-part dummies carry the risk of breaking apart. Luckily, our Haakaa dummies meet every single one of these points!
We have several options when you're looking for dummies:
Remember, though – even if you've tried a whole range of different dummies, you may find that your child simply doesn't like any of them. That is perfectly normal. While many babies like the comfort of sucking on a dummy, plenty of children never take to them at all, or there may only be one specific type of dummy your baby likes. It's all a matter of trying everything and figuring out what your baby likes, doesn't like, or just what works for your unique set of circumstances.
